Early departures / Airport transfers

Early flight? Plan your airport journey

Start with your airline’s required arrival time. Then compare the first train, night buses or a confirmed taxi booking.

When do the first airport-bound trains leave?

These trains run towards the airport, not towards the city. Train journey times exclude getting to the station, waiting, walking to the counter or transferring to another terminal.

First train, night bus or prebooked taxi?

Check whether each option meets your required arrival time, then compare walking, handling bags and total cost. Allow for more than an ideal journey time.

Check night routes and airline requirements separately

01

Hong Kong Island example: airport-bound N11

  • The current Citybus timetable lists N11 departures from Central (Macau Ferry) daily from 01:20 to 04:20, every 60 minutes.
  • Terminus departure times are not boarding times in Wan Chai, Causeway Bay or Jordan.
  • Check arrival information for your own stop.
Search N11 on Citybus and select the airport direction

02

Kowloon examples: N21 and NA21

  • N21 runs from Tsim Sha Tsui (Star Ferry) to the airport.
  • NA21 is a different night route, with coverage in Mei Foo, Cheung Sha Wan and Nam Cheong updated in August 2026.
  • Select the airport-bound service in the official search and check its stops, timetable and airport drop-off.

HK Express: arrival guidance versus cutoffs

  • Recommended arrival: at the check-in counter at least 2 hours before departure.
  • Hong Kong counters: T2, Aisle U; open 3 hours before departure and close 60 minutes before.
  • Self check-in / self bag drop: close 75 minutes before departure.
  • Boarding gate: closes 30 minutes before departure.
  • Follow the rules for your service and flight notices; a cutoff is not an arrival target.

04

Cathay: confirm T1 and bag-drop requirements

  • Hong Kong counters: T1; open 180 minutes before departure.
  • Counter closure: 60 minutes before departure.
  • Self-service facilities: close 60 minutes before departure.
  • These are cutoffs. Allow extra time for queues, checks and reaching your gate.

Work backwards: an early-flight example

Suppose your flight leaves at 07:55 and you plan to follow airline guidance to reach the counter 2 hours before departure: your target is 05:55. This is a planning example, not a rule for every flight.

  1. 01

    Set the airport arrival target

    • Check the operating airline, flight date, terminal, bag-drop and boarding requirements.
    • Ask separately about any assistance you need.
  2. 02

See whether the first train fits

    • The first 05:50 train from Hong Kong station plus about 24 minutes on the train reaches Airport station at roughly 06:14.
    • That is already later than the example’s 05:55 counter target, before any walking.
  3. 03

Compare an earlier bus or road transfer

    • Check a night bus that can meet your target.
    • For a prebooked taxi, provide the required arrival time and pickup address and get the arrangement confirmed instead of relying on an estimated drive alone.
  4. 04

    Include preparation before leaving

    • Bags, documents, checkout and meeting the driver take time.
    • For a departure after midnight, write the date explicitly rather than saying “tonight” or “tomorrow morning”.

Planning method: required airport arrival time minus transport time, station access, waiting, loading and a buffer gives a planned time to leave. Check each part for your trip; the calculation does not guarantee a flight connection.

Check the airline’s arrival guidance

Prepare these details for an early transfer enquiry

  1. Flight number, departure date and time, and the terminal specified by your airline.
  2. Full pickup address, hotel name or building entrance, and required airport arrival time.
  3. Adult and child passenger counts, luggage quantities and dimensions, and other items.
  4. A contact number; wait for confirmation of the vehicle, meeting date and time, location and total fare.
Enter your airport transfer details

Vehicle availability, meeting time, loading and fare are subject to confirmation by the fleet.

Early-flight questions

Is the first Airport Express always enough for a flight after 7am?
The departure time alone cannot answer that. Check the required airport arrival time, then include station access, the train, walking and airport procedures. If the first train arrives after your target, compare earlier transport.
Is a taxi the only option before dawn?
No. Citybus operates N11, N21 and other night routes, with different directions, stops and timetables. Check the official service details against your trip before choosing.
Can I arrive later if I have checked in online?
Online check-in does not complete bag drop, document checks, security or immigration. Follow airline instructions and the time on your boarding pass. Do not treat the counter cutoff as your arrival target.
How do I arrange an early taxi to the airport?
Provide your flight date and time, full pickup address, passenger count and luggage details. Check departure fares and wait for the fleet to confirm meeting time, vehicle and total fare.
